The allowances included “acting up allowances” for his period as acting deputy director general. The allowances related to “core salary which was coded in error as allowances, rather than moving the national director of acute hospitals division to the correct pay scale”. Mr Woods received an allowance of €13,586 last year and €14,984 in 2014. His basic salary compares with that of Taoiseach Micheál Martin, who receives an annual salary of €211,742. The HSE said he is not a member of its pension scheme and does not receive employer contributions. He also gets a benefit in kind of €19,141 to cover the cost of his company car. Mr Reid, who is paid €358,651 to run the health service, received €48,416 in allowances last year as part of his package. The HSE also paid allowances to two executives, Mr Reid and Mr Woods. Liam Woods, the director of acute hospitals, incurred credit card expenditure of €2,353. The biggest credit card spend expenditure was incurred by Dr Colm Henry, the chief clinical officer, who spent €4,619 in 2019 and €6,112 in 2020 on travel and subsistence and €475 on “other” expenses. It is understood most expenses claims are vouched and processed through payroll. The total expenses for two years for all five executives came to €17,542. The executive now intends to resume publishing the information after the Sunday Independent requested it.Ī spokesperson said it will reveal the expenses once a year and also intends to make public the backlog of unpublished credit card expenses in the coming days.Īccording to figures released to the Sunday Independent under the Freedom of Information Act, five executives were issued a company credit card. The practice appears to have stopped in 2017 when the credit card expenses incurred by the then director general of the HSE, Tony O’Brien, and Dr Liam Woods, head of acute operations, were disclosed. It had promised more than a decade ago to make public the corporate credit card expenses of its executives every quarter.
The HSE has said it will publish a backlog of credit card expenditure of its senior executives on its website after a four-year gap in the practice.
